Stakeholder meeting in Kerela promotes decent work for domestic workers

Kerala (ILO News): The Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) is reaching out to Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Kerala to raise awareness about domestic workers’ rights. The initiative is aimed at encouraging employers’ households to take positive steps in recognizing and supporting domestic workers. This activity is supported by the PRS-STRIDE Project, which aims at promoting rights and social inclusion through organization and formalization. 

Additionally, the PRS Project is supporting SEWA in forming domestic workers’ skill collectives and trade committees in the state. These committees aim to formalize domestic workers and serve as key platforms for addressing issues in the care sector, with a focus on domestic work. By coordinating efforts, these committees enhance representation, improve working conditions, and advocate for fair treatment.

The ILO team of Ms Divya Verma, Program Officer and Ms Baishali Lahiri, National Project Coordinator, PRS-STRIDE Project, also met the office of the Labour Secretary and Commissioner to discuss promoting better working conditions for domestic workers. Through these initiatives, the project plays a vital role in advancing domestic workers’ rights, fostering dialogue between employers and workers, and building institutional mechanisms to ensure better recognition and protection for domestic workers in India.
