Sierra Leone has been a member of the ILO since 1961 and has ratified 30 ILO Conventions, including 8 fundamental Conventions. Today, the ILO assists the country through its Decent Work Country Programme, aligning with local priorities and supporting the development of a National Labour Migration policy to enhance regional integration and labour migration governance. Additionally, initiatives like the Opportunity Salone project, funded by the European Union's 11th European Development Fund, focuses on job creation and improving job quality for women, youth, and persons with disabilities in rural areas. This initiative includes inclusive value chain development for SMEs and cooperatives, and feeder road maintenance to boost market access. Other examples of the ILO's interventions in the country include a market systems analysis to identify challenges in the Palm Oil, Vegetables, Cocoa, and Cassava sectors, and policies to overcome systemic issues hindering employment for vulnerable groups.
