Everyday, millions of women and girls face violence and harassment at home, at work, and in their communities.
This affects their safety, their dignity, and their ability to earn a living.
Five years ago, the International Labour Organization made history with the adoption of Convention 190, the first international treaty
that recognizes that everyone has right to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence.
Today, 45 countries have ratified C190, making it one of the fastest ratified ILO conventions. We should build on this momentum and strive for more ratifications and effective implementation.
C190 is about putting an end to people’s suffering because of mistreatment at work. It is about empowering them to speak up and seek and obtain remedy. But C190 also stresses that prevention isn't just a moral necessity. It’s a smart investment.
When we invest in safe and respectful workplaces, we invest in more productive workplaces and more peaceful and cohesive societies. We invest in women’s economic empowerment, and in a fairer world of work for all.
This year's theme “UNITE”! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls couldn’t be more opportune.
I call on all governments to ratify and implement C190. I urge employers, workers and their organisations to engage in dialogue and invest in zero tolerance workplace policies. Together, we can build a brighter future for women and girls, free from violence and harassment.
