International Labour Organization strengthens South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Tanzania

The International Labour Organization (ILO) Country Office for the United Republic of Tanzania, Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda continues to make significant strides in fostering sustainable development and improving labour standards. As part of its commitment, the ILO recently handed over a Toyota Hilux along with office equipment for two workstations—one in Dodoma and another at the project site in Simiyu—to the Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office for Labour, Youth, Employment, and People with Disabilities (PMO-LYED).

This equipment will facilitate effective implementation of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) project, enhancing coordination, efficiency, and impact. Additionally, the implementation of the SSCT project in the cotton sector reinforces ongoing efforts to eliminate child labour by strengthening policies, enhancing children’s school attendance, and protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.

During the handover, Ms. Edith, the Director of Human Resource Management (DHRM), representing the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, expressed her gratitude to the ILO for its continued support. She emphasized that the donated vehicle and workstations will be used as intended, particularly in advancing Decent Work initiatives across the country. She also pledged ongoing support and collaboration, reaffirming the shared commitment to sustainable employment, social protection, and the eradication of child labour.

Empowering South-South Collaboration

Unlike traditional donor funded projects, this is a partnership project between the ILO, Tanzania and Brazil that provides mutually beneficial resource to the two countries. The project fosters the exchange of best practices and technical expertise, while promoting peer-to-peer learning in the cotton sector.

Resources from this project will directly contribute to:
•    Enhancing the institutional capacity of PMO-LYED to combat child labour and improve child protection at the national and district levels.
•    Promoting cotton producers’ compliance with Tanzanian legislation on international standards and awareness of child labour in the cotton value chain through labour inspection.
•    Promoting occupational safety and health (OSH) at work in the cotton value chain.
•    Increasing social protection coverage in cotton-growing areas.

Fighting Child Labour through Decent Work

The delivery of resources to the PMO_LYED further enhances the project's ability to coordinate and implement child labour eradication initiatives, ensuring that all children can enjoy a future free from exploitation.

A future of stronger partnerships

Additionally, it underscores our shared commitment to strengthening international cooperation, promoting sustainable employment, and ensuring dignified working conditions for all.

As the project advances, it will continue to drive transformative change, devise innovative approached to ensure cotton value chains are free from child labour and safe for all.
