Celebrating 10 years of progress

Fair Recruitment Initiative: Paving the way for decent work

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Fair Recruitment Initiative, the ILO has documented progress and lessons learned to identify key achievements, gaps, emerging challenges and future priorities.

A decade ago, the Fair Recruitment Initiative (FRI) was launched under the ILO Director General’s call for a Fair Migration Agenda. Since its inception in 2014, the Fair Recruitment Initiative has remained pivotal to the ILO’s efforts in ensuring fair recruitment of workers at the national and international level, bringing renewed focus and visibility to this crucial issue.

Fair Recruitment is the first step to decent work for all: it ensures that the protection of workers, aligns with employment policies and labour market needs. The General Principles and Operational Guidelines for Fair Recruitment and Definition of Related Recruitment Fees and Costs are at the heart of the Initiative and represent the most comprehensive, global guidance on recruitment, steering the ILO’s action and inspiring relevant stakeholders at all levels.

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Initiative, the ILO has developed this brochure to present progress and key achievements of the Fair Recruitment Initiative.

By implementing fair recruitment practices, we create opportunities for decent work for all individuals, promoting social justice and breaking down barriers to equality in the world of work.
