Safety + Health for All Flagship Programme
EU-ILO Partnership: Safe and Healthy Workplaces for All
Every year, millions of workers worldwide face life-threatening hazards at work. Occupational accidents, diseases, and injuries continue to claim the lives of 2.93 million workers annually, with work-related illnesses responsible for nearly 89% of these fatalities. This reality calls for urgent action.
The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the European Union (EU) have partnered to address these critical challenges through a comprehensive and collaborative approach. Together, they aim to promote the fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment for workers in all industries, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
The Challenge
2.93 million deaths: The annual toll from occupational accidents and diseases.
395 million injuries: Non-fatal work-related injuries each year.
Climate-related hazards: Rising temperatures and air pollution are increasing risk for workers, with excessive heat causing 22.85 million injuries and 18,970 deaths annually.
Mental health concerns: Poor working conditions can severely impact mental health, leading to 12 billion lost workdays annually due to depression and anxiety.
EU-ILO Collaboration: A Global Commitment
The ILO's Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) 2024-2030 aligns with the EU's Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work. This collaboration focuses on improving safety standards, fostering compliance with international labour standards, and building global, sustainable, safe and healthy working environments. Through the Safety + Health for All Flagship Programme including its Vision Zero Fund, the ILO and the EU are leading efforts to reduce work-related fatalities, injuries, and diseases.
Achievements so Far
185 million workers: Beneficiaries of ILO's Safety + Health for All Programme since 2016.
Global supply chains: Improved safety and health in industries such as agriculture, construction and textiles, prioritizing the health and well-being of workers in vulnerable conditions.
Technical assistance: Supporting governments, including labour inspectors and social partners in promoting international labour standards on OSH.
Moving Forward
The ILO and EU continue to expand their efforts to create safer workplaces, addressing new risks posed by climate change, emerging technologies, and pandemics. Through multilateral cooperation and strategic partnerships, they pave the way for sustainable economic growth and decent work for all.
