Egypt factsheet: ACCEL Africa
This fact sheet provides key data, milestones, and ongoing efforts aimed at eradicating child labour in Egypt and ensuring a brighter future for all children.
Egypt has made significant progress in combating child labour through policy reforms, capacity-building initiatives, and strengthened partnerships. The National Action Plan for Combating the Worst Forms of Child Labour (2018-2025), led by the Government of Egypt with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), has enhanced child protection measures, improved labour inspections, and expanded education and economic empowerment programs for vulnerable families.
Through the ACCEL Africa project, children have been withdrawn from hazardous work, reintegrated into education, and provided with safer livelihood opportunities. Over 2,600 stakeholders, including government officials, employers, and workers' representatives, have been trained to advocate for and implement policies addressing child labour. Additionally, the digitalization of labour and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) inspections has strengthened enforcement mechanisms.
Despite these achievements, child labour remains a challenge, with 4.2 million working children, including 3.7 million in hazardous or unlawful work, according to the 2023 National Child Labour Survey. Continued efforts are needed to expand child labour monitoring systems, strengthen social protection measures, and enhance private sector engagement.
