Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2024: Assessing Implementation of the Global Compact for Migration

The report highlights the realities of migrants in Asia and the Pacific and provides comprehensive recommendations to enhance migration governance to be more inclusive and gender-responsive.

The report highlights the realities of migrants in Asia and the Pacific. Over the past few decades, the Asia-Pacific region has witnessed women share nearly half of all international migrants. The number of women migrating for work within and across the region has been on the rise, with a concentration in low-wage occupations such as domestic and care work, given that the region and globally are facing a demographic transition. Yet, they remain disproportionately vulnerable to exploitation, discrimination, and violence. Importantly, their contribution is undervalued. Many women migrant workers face barriers to skill recognition and decent employment.

This power imbalance could be compounded by intersecting factors such as increasing climate change impacts, protected conflicts and armed violence, and emerging crises. The report provides comprehensive recommendations to enhance migration governance to be more inclusive and gender-responsive.
